No wise man ever wished to be younger. - Jonathan Swift

I rather graciously offered my 12 year old son the opportunity to come to church with me or to stay at home this morning. The response was 'Why would I CHOOSE to go to church? I'm not a Christian".
It isn't so much that I mind him not being a Christian - he has to find his own path, it is the arrogance that he has nothing to learn from ancient wisdom and people of faith. However, I can't really complain, I was probably twice as bad at his age.
So I was transfixed by the Gospel reading this morning, another mum having difficulties with her twelve year old son in Luke Chapter 2.. the verses that stood out for me were:

42And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. 46After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 51Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favour.

Made me wonder about my own arrogance. Am I prepared to sit and listen and ask questions? If I do, will I increase in wisdom and in divine and human favour?
